In a librarian workforce that is predominantly female in Aotearoa schools, we have a responsibility to be informed about all gender issues and how we can ensure our collections and reading advisory are diverse and appropriate for all our students and staff. This course is a repeat of the course run in 2021 and 2022, so you don't need to repeat it if you have already completed one of those courses. What to expect in this course? This course is designed by New Zealand school librarians, for school librarians - for anyone who is ready and willing to learn and try new things and share their thoughts and learning with others. You can work at your own pace, in your own time and network with other school librarians. For those school librarians working in schools on their own, this is invaluable.  Our first SLANZA Google+ discussion of the year is up and running on Google+.
We are looking at trying things outside our comfort zones. Please join the conversation and share your successes and failures., so we can spread our knowledge and learning. Our G+ discussions are designed to be slow, to allow time for deep thought and to reflect on our practices. Over two weeks there will be weekly readings and a chance to share and discuss. You can dip in and out of the discussion as time allows you, and participate as much or as little as you wish. You must be a member of SLANZA to take part in this discussion as well as belonging to SLANZA’s Google+ Community. This will be the last time we use Google+ as it will be shutting down after this and we will find another platform to enable these exchanges. We will be starting this Term 3 discussion on Monday 21 August 2017 and we will keep adding topics and questions for 4 weeks. The SLANZA PD team is excited to announce our second G+ discussion topic for the year. It will begin on Tuesday 6 June. Titles currently available As you know, helping to build a confident and knowledgeable school library profession is incredibly important to us. We believe that our communities deserve the very best school libraries possible, and it is one of our strategic goals to improve the professional standing, working conditions, and qualification levels of the staff who work in those libraries. Enabling access to a range of professional development opportunities is a vital part of achieving this goal.
In 2012, SLANZA surveyed school library staff about their Professional Development needs. Around 200 people responded to that survey, and as a result of what we learned, our Connected Librarians online PD modules were developed and introduced the following year. Fast forward four years, and as part of our ongoing work in the area of Professional Development for school library staff, we are asking for your input again. This time our survey is focused on work and qualification profiles - your library situation, employment, and continuing professional development including library & information studies qualifications. The survey is open to SLANZA members and non-members alike, so please forward the survey link (below) to any library colleagues - SLANZA members or not, school library staff or not - who would like to participate. All the responses we receive will provide crucial information to guide our professional development strategy and our relationships with other professional development providers. It’s a busy time of year for all of us, with most school library staff doing their annual stock-take, and senior sign-out for high schools. I’ve enjoyed seeing so many invitations to SLANZA end-of-year celebrations going out recently too, I wish I could go to all of them! Collected magazineThe next issue of Collected magazine is starting to come together with many submissions already received. Our chosen text for the inaugural discussion is R David Lankes’ free eBook “Expect More”. David presented a keynote session at LIANZA’s conference last week, and you can watch the video of that presentation (and others) online. To take part in our discussion group, you’ll need to join the G+ community first - over 100 of our members have joined so far. There has been some really interesting sharing and commenting already, relating to the first couple of chapters of Expect More. It’s not too late to join us, if you’d like to be part of this stimulating and thought-provoking conversation! Miriam Tuohy Registrations for module #1 (Professional Reading) of the Connected Librarians course close this Friday, June 12th.
Next week all applicants will receive confirmation of whether they have been placed in this intake. More information is available in the course flyer and outline documents, and you can register here. In 2013-2014 SLANZA offered our very successful Connected Librarians course to members. We are grateful to those who participated, for supporting SLANZA’s professional development and also for giving us feedback on ways we might improve what we do.
As part of a major review of the course - including participant’s feedback - we are very pleased to announce that each of the six topics that made up the original Connected Librarians course will now be offered as individual modules. We believe this will make our course even more accessible, by removing some of the barriers to participating, and offering the flexibility to better fit learners’ individual needs. The course modules are designed and fully facilitated by practising New Zealand school librarians, for school librarians. They are ideal for those library staff just starting out with online tools, who are ready and willing to try new things. Registration is free for SLANZA members. Class places are limited. Registrations for module #1 - Professional Reading using RSS feeds and Feedly - will open on Tuesday June 2nd (week 7). Successful applicants will receive invitations to our learning community in Week 9, and the class itself runs in Weeks 10 and 11.
