Registrations for the SLANZA Module #17: Gender and Sexuality in School Libraries module of the Connected Librarians course are open from today Tuesday 28 May 2024 and will close on Friday 7 June 2024.
Here is the link on the SLANZA website to register: This course is for anyone who would like to explore gender issues as they relate to our school library practice. In a librarian workforce that is predominantly female in Aotearoa schools, we have a responsibility to be informed about all gender issues and how we can ensure our collections and reading advisory are diverse and appropriate for all our students and staff. This course is a repeat of the course run in 2021 and 2022, so you don't need to repeat it if you have already completed one of those courses. What to expect in this course? On successful course completion, learners will be able to:
This course is designed by New Zealand school librarians, for school librarians - for anyone who is ready and willing to learn and try new things and share their thoughts and learning with others. You can work at your own pace, in your own time and network with other school librarians. For those school librarians working in schools on their own, this is invaluable. The course is only available and free for SLANZA members. Please visit the Online PD page on our SLANZA website for further information and to register. Or register here.

Our first SLANZA Google+ discussion of the year is up and running on Google+.
We are looking at trying things outside our comfort zones. Please join the conversation and share your successes and failures., so we can spread our knowledge and learning. Our G+ discussions are designed to be slow, to allow time for deep thought and to reflect on our practices. Over two weeks there will be weekly readings and a chance to share and discuss. You can dip in and out of the discussion as time allows you, and participate as much or as little as you wish. You must be a member of SLANZA to take part in this discussion as well as belonging to SLANZA’s Google+ Community. This will be the last time we use Google+ as it will be shutting down after this and we will find another platform to enable these exchanges. Clare Forrest For the SLANZA PD Team The SLANZA PD team is announcing our next G+ discussion topic for the year.
For those lucky enough to go to the SLANZA Conference this July it’s time to share, reflect on, celebrate and challenge ourselves about our experience. We will be starting this Term 3 discussion on Monday 21 August 2017 and we will keep adding topics and questions for 4 weeks. Our G+ discussions are designed to be slow, to allow time for deep thought and to reflect on our practices. You can dip in and out of the discussion as time allows you, and participate as much or as little as you wish. You must be a member of SLANZA to take part in this discussion, as well as belonging to SLANZA’s Google+ Community. We look forward to meeting you and hearing your thoughts – either for this discussion or one of our next professional development discussions. The SLANZA PD team is excited to announce our second G+ discussion topic for the year. It will begin on Tuesday 6 June.
The Ministry of Education is committed to providing innovative learning environments where everyone can work together to support the best learning for everyone. What does this mean for school libraries and the way we practice? Our G+ discussions are designed to be slow, to allow time for deep thought and to reflect on our practices. Over four weeks there will be four readings followed by reflective questions. You can dip in and out of the discussion as time allows you, and participate as much or as little as you wish. You must be a member of SLANZA to take part in this discussion (and it’s a great year to join with conference coming up), as well as belonging to SLANZA’s Google+ Community. We look forward to “seeing” you and hearing your thoughts – either for this discussion or one of our other professional development events planned for later this year. We are very pleased to announce that SLANZA members can now access a selection of eBooks to support their continuing professional development. These resources will be available to members only, through SLANZA’s new eBook platform. Wheelers have made this possible by generously providing our ePlatform at no cost. We are very grateful for their support of our organisation, and our members’ ongoing professional growth. We invite all current SLANZA members to register for the SLANZA ePlatform now. When you register, please use your preferred email address (not a shared library email) and your personal membership number if known. We aim to process new registrations within 24 hours. Titles currently availableAs you know, helping to build a confident and knowledgeable school library profession is incredibly important to us. We believe that our communities deserve the very best school libraries possible, and it is one of our strategic goals to improve the professional standing, working conditions, and qualification levels of the staff who work in those libraries. Enabling access to a range of professional development opportunities is a vital part of achieving this goal.
In 2012, SLANZA surveyed school library staff about their Professional Development needs. Around 200 people responded to that survey, and as a result of what we learned, our Connected Librarians online PD modules were developed and introduced the following year. Fast forward four years, and as part of our ongoing work in the area of Professional Development for school library staff, we are asking for your input again. This time our survey is focused on work and qualification profiles - your library situation, employment, and continuing professional development including library & information studies qualifications. The survey is open to SLANZA members and non-members alike, so please forward the survey link (below) to any library colleagues - SLANZA members or not, school library staff or not - who would like to participate. All the responses we receive will provide crucial information to guide our professional development strategy and our relationships with other professional development providers. Please follow this link to access the survey: http://goo.gl/forms/yMuvyJTLa6wh7e1i2 The survey will remain open until the 31st of May. We really appreciate you taking a few minutes to have your say. Thank you, Miriam Tuohy President SLANZA There has been much going on in the couple of weeks since my last update. It’s a busy time of year for all of us, with most school library staff doing their annual stock-take, and senior sign-out for high schools. I’ve enjoyed seeing so many invitations to SLANZA end-of-year celebrations going out recently too, I wish I could go to all of them! Here’s the latest news from National Exec: Conference proceedings updatedA final large batch of presentations from our Conference has gone up on the SLANZA website. Alongside these, we also have some additional material - a document prepared by Steph Ellis with follow-up readings, links and information about the apps and ideas presented by each of our keynote speakers. Many thanks to Steph for creating and sharing this document. All these files are available now from the conference proceedings page. Collected magazineThe next issue of Collected magazine is starting to come together with many submissions already received. Thank you to those who have written articles for this conference themed issue, and also to our team of proof-readers who assist Greig (our Editor) with getting the magazine ready for publication. You can still submit content for this issue, too. The final date for articles or book reviews to reach us is this coming Thursday, November 19th. Information about writing for the magazine is available on our website, and you can email articles, photos, or book reviews directly to [email protected] Professional Development discussionThis week Sandi (PD Team Leader) has kicked off the first of our regular PD discussions in SLANZA’s Google+ community. Our chosen text for the inaugural discussion is R David Lankes’ free eBook “Expect More”. David presented a keynote session at LIANZA’s conference last week, and you can watch the video of that presentation (and others) online. To take part in our discussion group, you’ll need to join the G+ community first - over 100 of our members have joined so far. There has been some really interesting sharing and commenting already, relating to the first couple of chapters of Expect More. It’s not too late to join us, if you’d like to be part of this stimulating and thought-provoking conversation! Ongoing workMembers of the National Executive are continuing to participate in various fora:
We are also working on our strategic plan and the resulting work plan, our budget for the coming year, and preparing to open nominations for our next SLANZA President - I will have more info to share about these next week. Contacting National ExecutivePlease do get in touch with me ([email protected]), or with your local representative on the National Executive if there is anything mentioned here that you'd like to discuss, or if there are any other matters you'd like our help or input with. We'd love to hear from you!
Miriam Tuohy Registrations for module #1 (Professional Reading) of the Connected Librarians course close this Friday, June 12th.
Next week all applicants will receive confirmation of whether they have been placed in this intake. More information is available in the course flyer and outline documents, and you can register here. In 2013-2014 SLANZA offered our very successful Connected Librarians course to members. We are grateful to those who participated, for supporting SLANZA’s professional development and also for giving us feedback on ways we might improve what we do.
As part of a major review of the course - including participant’s feedback - we are very pleased to announce that each of the six topics that made up the original Connected Librarians course will now be offered as individual modules. We believe this will make our course even more accessible, by removing some of the barriers to participating, and offering the flexibility to better fit learners’ individual needs. The course modules are designed and fully facilitated by practising New Zealand school librarians, for school librarians. They are ideal for those library staff just starting out with online tools, who are ready and willing to try new things. Registration is free for SLANZA members. Class places are limited. Registrations for module #1 - Professional Reading using RSS feeds and Feedly - will open on Tuesday June 2nd (week 7). Successful applicants will receive invitations to our learning community in Week 9, and the class itself runs in Weeks 10 and 11. More information about Connected Librarians is available here, or you can contact me directly with any questions. Miriam Tuohy Professional Development team leader On behalf of the National Executive, I am pleased to announce that the recipients of SLANZA’s Study Grants for 2015 have been decided. Our warmest congratulations go out to these successful applicants:
Congratulations once again to all our grant recipients, we wish you every success with your studies in the coming year. Miriam Tuohy Professional Development Team Leader |
