Approximately twenty librarians met at Porirua College for our last gathering for 2019. We began with a Christmas themed afternoon tea, which was eagerly devoured by those attending.
We were then fortunate enough to have our Regional NZEI field officer Donna Eden explain to us the process and progress of pay equity for support staff. It is a complicated system, but it is advancing, even if not as quickly as we would like. She also explained the latest offer from the Ministry of Education for the SSCA - Support Staff Collective Agreement. Kristy Wilson (Librarian, Porirua College) gave a presentation on graphic novels. She explained the reasons why graphic novels are a valuable part of a library’s collection, and showed us examples of some of the best titles. The tables we were sitting at had piles of graphic novels for us to look through, sorted according to age suitability, and we all came away with a greater appreciation of the genre, and a very long list of books to be purchased in 2020. At the end of our meeting we farewelled one of our Wellington Regional Committee members. Joanna Ludbrook has been a member for over ten years, and we will miss her cheerfulness, enthusiasm and experience. Below is the link for the slide show that Kristy put together for us. It is a wonderful resource for finding out what graphic novels you should have in your library. Graphic Novel Presentation 2019
