To the backdrop of truck horns the first SLANZA/ARANZ Joint Event was held on Saturday September 24th in Friendly Feilding. With 25 attendees from a wide range of backgrounds the event provided a valuable networking opportunity for those starting out on their archiving journey and those already immersed in archives. We were treated to a fantastic line-up of speakers from Victoria University, Massey University Library, Open Polytechnic of New Zealand, Alexander Turnball Library, Archives Central and Recollect. These speakers provided us with a raft of information to consider when preparing for an archiving project, and guidance on the processes involved. We were then treated to a tour of Archives Central and a Digitisation Workshop during which we saw the process of archiving in action. Receiving input from attendees who have already been through the archiving process was helpful in potentially avoiding some of the pitfalls. A big thank you to the organisers, speakers and attendees for making the day a success.

We urgently need more members to join the committee. We have five members covering from New Plymouth through to Hawke’s Bay and all the places in between. Being on the committee isn’t onerous and can be a lot of fun. You get to meet new people, promote school libraries and help organise some great professional development.

Central region’s Term 3 professional development event saw us descend upon Whanganui Intermediate School’s library. After the travellers had fuelled up on coffee, Miriam Tuohy (with a little help from clicker-gurl, Sandi Faulconbridge) talked us through her “Dream Library Collection” and how we could build our own. Key points were that building good collections is actually time consuming, but to remember that collection development is only a PART of our job, and PEOPLE should be at the heart of what we do. As usual, much discussion was provoked throughout the presentation and we are hopeful that this will translate into positive actions across the region. Cathie Calman then allowed us to nosey through her beautiful library, answered our copious questions, and graciously accepted our envious comments. Thank you, Cathie, for hosting our event - we are grateful to have accommodating members throughout our region that allow us to “spread the word” in different locations. Next we visited the library of Sue Goldsbury and Linda Lamb at Whanganui High School. This big, bright, airy space encouraged more envy. Many of us were particularly taken with the gallery of student artworks. Display ideas will definitely be appropriated and I, for one, was overwhelmed by the fantastic condition of the book stock! A big thank you again, Sue and Linda, for taking time out of your weekends to allow a group of “curious” librarians to roam in your space. Feedback from participants tells us that it is these opportunities where a lot of learning takes place and we appreciate that we could not do it without the support of our members. The day ended with a casual lunch at a local cafe. As usual, there was lots of sharing, laughter and discussion of plans for world domination - or school domination, at the very least! Thanks to all those who travelled from near and far to join us in our day. We love the fact that you make the commitment to do that in your own time - and it is always so energising spending time with you all. These road-trips are always fantastic :-) We look forward to seeing you there On Saturday 2nd July a group of keen school librarians met in Palmerston North to attend Central region’s annual general meeting and spend some time looking at reader-centred libraries. Sandi kicked off proceedings by chairing the AGM. It was great to hear of the successes and professional development opportunities that have been available within our region over the last 12 months. Updates from the National Executive were also given, as we are lucky to have two committee members on the executive - Sandi as our regional representative and Miriam as Immediate Past President. After a bountiful morning tea (we are famous for over catering), Steph E, ably assisted by Miriam, led us through an overview of Rachel van Riel’s work on “reader-friendly library services”. The basic premise of which is to put readers at the centre of decision making and processes. The presentation led to some great discussions about what we are doing, and what we can do, to remember our readers in these times of growing technology use and changing educational landscapes. Central committee was delighted with the turnout for the day, and were especially pleased that we had people travel from all over our large catchment area (including Masterton, Wanganui, New Plymouth and Napier). As an added bonus participants left with overflowing goodie bags that included books, bookmarks, posters and other treats. Saturday 9th April saw a small group of dedicated librarians meet at the amazing newly refurbished Palmerston North Girls' High School library. WOW! It is stunning :-)
We started off with an interesting and thought-provoking discussion about labeling our collections which turned into a discussion on how to shelve our collections as well it included some impromptu hands-on changing of Miriam's shelves. This was followed by a Book Covering workshop led by Miriam where participants got to have some hands-on practice of covering a variety of books. We picked up quite a few tips from this one. And we finished up with a discussion about the new National Library lending service - how those of us that were using it have been handling our books and suggestions for those who have yet to try it. Thank you to Steph G, Jackie and Sue for coming all the way from Taranaki. Thank you also to Steph E & Sandi for coming all the way from Hawkes Bay. And a big thank you to Miriam for hosting us and showing us your fabulous new library space :-) |
