Kia ora koutou, my whole working life has been spent with books. As a teenager, my very first after-school job was at the local public library as a shelver. I worked in administration for a book publisher and discovered my love of systems and processes worked well in both the library and administration setting.
School libraries beckoned after I had my children, the pull of term time only work, and school hours was strong. My school library journey started in a primary school with an AccessIT printed manual and “good luck, we believe in you” from my new Principal. Since then, I’ve strived to make sure that the libraries I work in are safe, inclusive, welcoming spaces full of bookish joy and inspiring stories, for both students and staff.
I am currently the Library Manager at Massey High School in West Auckland. We are a school of 1900 students rebuilding the vibe of the library after it was decimated by a lack of understanding.
I joined SLANZA in 2016, I love the camaraderie and collegiality that SLANZA creates given the siloed nature of our jobs. To be able to band together with other school librarians who have similar passions and goals is our strength. I joined the Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland committee in 2023 and shortly afterwards took on the role of NE rep for the region.
