Books Back Better
A heartfelt ngaa mihi thank you for your donations!
The Books Back Better project was initiated when author, Mary-anne Scott, saw a need in her community and approached Hawkes Bay authors, SLANZA and Booksellers Aotearoa NZ to see if they would be interested in teaming up to support the kura across the motu who had been adversely affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.
The aim of this fundraising project was to get new books back into the affected learning environments. The aim of the Books Back Better project was to raise funds to give kura, schools, Kohanga Reo and Kindergartens tokens so they had the agency to choose new books for their ākonga. Thanks to our many generous donors we raised over $25,000 to distribute to those schools hit hardest by the Cyclone. Kura/schools, Kohanga Reo and Kindergartens affected by cyclone Gabrielle were invited to apply for the funding. Through the application process kura shared heartbreaking stories of loss from this major weather event. Many are still displaced and the book tokens to purchase new books will certainly give the ākonga in those learning environments something to look forward to. In early September the tokens were sent out to 18 schools across the North Island who applied for funds and met the criteria. Mary-anne Scott visited several of the kura and was personally able to share tokens to them. We have heard many heartbreaking stories of Kura, Kohanga Reo and Kindergartens who lost so much in this weather event. Tokens have now been received by our applicants and we received lovely emails of thanks and appreciation as they start to purchase beautiful new books for their akonga to enjoy. |
