SLANZA Wellington Schedule of Events 2020

14/2/2020

Welcome back to another exciting year in our school libraries. We hope that your year has started well and you have already had many visits from keen and enthusiastic students and staff, discovering the new joys of your great library and the things you can do for them. We do know that there will be challenges for many in the year ahead - reduced hours, limited budgets, libraries having to move, students distracted by the interweb, staff forgetting how amazing we are... That is why it is such a good idea to get together and network with your fellow librarians and school library supporters. That is why SLANZA is here for you.

What SLANZA has planned for the year
We are  planning some exciting and worthwhile events for you, and to help you plan your year, here is SLANZA Wellington Region’s schedule of events for 2020. We will provide you with more detailed information before each event.

SLANZA 2020 Conference
If you haven’t seen the emails, tweets and Facebook posts about the SLANZA 2020 Conference in Wellington on 27 - 30 September, please go to the website and check it out. Early bird registrations are open now, as is the portal to submit abstracts for those interested in presenting at conference. Wellington is your hometown, so joining our 20th birthday party is easy! Keynotes will be announced soon.

Message from your new SLANZA President about meeting for a korero
“On 6 March I am planning to come to Wellington for a SLANZA meeting. I would love to meet as many local librarians as possible to have a chat about their mahi, what works for them, what are the barriers to enabling their libraries from flourishing, what SLANZA can do to support them, and how are you feeling as professionals within your school communities.

I reckon a good korero about who we are and what we do is important. We are doing these around Aotearoa to gain a perspective of how we are all doing - a library wellness overview if you like.

So please meet up at the Home Cafe in the National Library at 7.00am on Friday 6 March. Please make sure we get as many Wellington librarians there as possible for this chat.”
Glenys Bichan

SLANZA Book Club
We are running a SLANZA Book Club this year. This is an opportunity to get together in a casual setting and do the thing that we love the most, and are really good at - talk about books. This will be a fun and informal regular event held once a term, and we will meet at the Foxglove Bar, Queens Wharf. We have an area put aside for us so we can talk up a book storm! Everybody welcome, no need to be a SLANZA member.

Term 1: Wednesday 4 March 6.30pm
Term 2: Thursday 14 May 6.30pm
Term 3: Wednesday 29 July 6.30pm
Term 4: TBC

Wellington SLANZA Term 4 Event

8/12/2019

Approximately twenty librarians met at Porirua College for our last gathering for 2019. We began with a Christmas themed afternoon tea, which was eagerly devoured by those attending.

We were then fortunate enough to have our Regional NZEI field officer Donna Eden explain to us the process and progress of pay equity for support staff. It is a complicated system, but it is advancing, even if not as quickly as we would like. She also explained the latest offer from the Ministry of Education for the SSCA - Support Staff Collective Agreement.

Kristy Wilson (Librarian, Porirua College) gave a presentation on graphic novels. She explained the reasons why graphic novels are a valuable part of a library’s collection, and showed us examples of some of the best titles. The tables we were sitting at had piles of graphic novels for us to look through, sorted according to age suitability, and we all came away with a greater appreciation of the genre, and a very long list of books to be purchased in 2020.

At the end of our meeting we farewelled one of our Wellington Regional Committee members. Joanna Ludbrook has been a member for over ten years, and we will miss her cheerfulness, enthusiasm and experience.

Below is the link for the slide show that Kristy put together for us. It is a wonderful resource for finding out what graphic novels you should have in your library.

SLANZA Wellington Term 3 meeting

12/9/2019

The meeting took place at Girvan Library, Wellington College on a wet afternoon. Liz Mason made us feel very welcome and had arranged for us to use a room above the library. As always, we shared an excellent afternoon tea.
Our special guest was Fleur Beale. She spoke to us for an hour or so, about her work. She talked about the things she has learnt about writing, and gave examples from her work. She spoke about her latest book and the background to its being written. Fleur also shared the proposed title she had chosen for the book, and that the publisher wanted something different. Fleur asked for our opinions and an interesting discussion ensued.

Our AGM followed, during which we farewelled Christine Cross for her ten years’ work on the Wellington Committee. Next year the national SLANZA conference will be held in Wellington, so 2020 will be a busy time for the committee.
After the meeting we went to Ozeki Restaurant for dinner. This was a cheerful time of networking and friendship.
