Central Committee - We Want You!

SLANZA Central region committee wants to be able to do more for and reach a greater number of people in our region - but we need help.  Given our large geographic area it is difficult for us to organise events throughout the region and reach our entire membership.  We think you could help solve this problem for us.  We would like you to become a committee member.

Benefits to being part of the Central committee:
  • opportunity to learn new skills
  • make new connections, both locally and within the larger region
  • bring face-to-face professional development to your local area
  • opportunity to shape the professional development you and your colleagues receive
  • professional and personal developments that come with being on a committee
  • opportunity to work alongside Miriam Tuohy, SLANZA president

Being on the committee is easier than you might think:
  • meetings: generally we only meet once a term to organise a PD event; meetings are held online via Skype and are not a big time commitment
  • travel: meetings are held online, so no need to travel for those, and you will not be expected to attend all the PD events in the region
  • time: one committee meeting and one PD event per term is about all you will have to commit to
  • conscripted tasks: we won’t force you to volunteer for anything
  • lack of skills / knowledge: you might believe you don’t have anything to offer, but that doesn’t mean it’s true - we think everyone has something they can contribute

If you are interested in becoming a member of the SLANZA Central committee and would like to attend our next meeting to see what it is all about contact Sandi Faulconbridge at sandif@taraprim.school.nz

Alternatively, you can contact any of the committee members with questions or expressions of interest:

Central regions Term 2 event was a Publishers evening kindly hosted once again by Paper Plus Palmerston North.  This was held on Thursday 18th June.  Attendees got the opportunity to network, shop for books and listen to the two publisher’s representatives, who came up from Wellington for the event, discuss all things trending, new and upcoming in the book industry.  Attendees also went home with a number of free books each.

Term 1 PD event – Creative Commons & Referencing 101

3/8/2015

Our Term 1 PD day - Creative Commons & Referencing 101 - was held on Wednesday 1st April after school, with the intention that teaching staff and library staff would be able to attend.  Thank you to Michelle at Tamatea High for kindly hosting this event.  We were able to get Matt McGregor of Creative Commons to include Napier in their countrywide CC Roadshow.  This had a school-based focus, with special note on issues particular to school libraries.

 There were 3 presentations:
    • Tim Kong - Network for Learning (via Skype)
    • Matt McGregor - Creative Commons
    • SLANZA (Sandi & Steph) - Referencing 101: using others work responsibly  (concentrating on Primary & Secondary school needs)
We had a good turnout, with 6 of the 16 attendees being teaching staff.  A lot of great discussion was generated from both the presentations.

The 'Referencing 101' presentation has been uploaded to our G+ community.
