Tertiary Transition

In 2005 the Otago Polytechnic produced a report entitled 'Curriculum Alignment Project: Information Literacy Survey". In the report they looked year 12/13 students at Dunedin schools. They asked the students and their teachers about the students research abilities.  The students and teachers both thought that the students skills were good. Then they followed those students to University and asked their professors.  The Professors stated that the students abilities were at a low level. The basic summary of the report was the student confidence levels regarding their researching abilities was high but their competence was low.

Since then many school libraries have started their own initiatives trying to bridge the gap between high school research skills and tertiary expectations.  In the Wellington region, Jane Shallcrass, Judy Waenga and myself (Karen Clarke) decided that we would like to produce a tool kit for students that we could use in libraries.  We met regularly and contacted the tertiary providers in the Wellington region. We wanted to be able to educate our students about the requirements of tertiary research and show them around the libraries.

We have produced a collection of resources for the toolkit so that you can talk to your students and guide them through the work.  We thought that term 3 would be the best time to fit this in to the school year. When you have time to talk to your year 12/13 students who are going to Tertiary education is up to you.
As we gathered resources to place in the tool kit we realized that Senga White's work is a great resource to use.  We are very fortunate that Senga has agreed that we can use her resources in our tool kit.  The toolkit is for you to use with your students in a way that works for your school and community. The Tertiary Transition PowerPoint in the related information section is for school librarians to look at and learn from.

If you have any questions regarding how to use the Tertiary Tranistion Toolkit you can contact the team at:
