Strategic Advisory Forum Communiqué
The Strategic Advisory Forum (SAF) to the National Library is a cross-library and information sector panel whose objective is to provide independent advice to the Chief Executive/National Librarian on strategies, challenges and emerging opportunities to benefit the wider New Zealand library sector and to shape the policy agenda.
At its recent meeting, the Strategic Advisory Forum focussed attention on the current economic climate, its impact on libraries and shared information and solutions. Points of note were:small libraries, particularly public, specials and schools, are under economic pressure. The tertiary sector and library schools are noticing increased numbers of students. There is an impact from foreign exchange on library collections.
Other matters arising from the discussion were:Te Ropu Whakahau wants to engage in debate and policy formation about indigenous knowledge and repositories. The CILIP review of education providers as part of professional registration is looking positive for international portability of NZ library qualifications. Copyright issues including the principles of free access to information as well as the practical issues for libraries must be addressed. Further urgent investigation is needed into the status and funding of school libraries and library staff. There should be focus upon thinking to inform discussions with stakeholders.
SAF commend the work of the Prison Libraries working group and looks forward to the final report, improved prison library services and hearing more about their work at LIANZA conference. This is timely with the plans to build new prisons and ensuring prison libraries are adequately resourced.
The Strategic Advisory Forum consists of representatives from the following: LIANZA, Te Ropu Whakahau (Maori in Libraries and Information Management), the Council for New Zealand University Libraries (CONZUL), the School Libraries Association of New Zealand Aotearoa (SLANZA), the Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics of New Zealand (ITPNZ), the Association of Public Library Managers (APLM), NZ Law Librarians Association (NZLLA), Health Special Interest Group (Health SIG), Government Information Group (GIG) and the Parliamentary Library.
